Do Muses Get Overtime?
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: I Am Number Four

So I wrote a short story. About 1500 words. I sent it around to different online magazines and it got picked up by Blood Moon Rising!! I'm so excited! Granted. It won't be published until April 2012, but it's going to be there!

I am also thinking about starting my own online magazine, but I think I should hold off until I can get some visitors to my site first....lol.

The Drain is in it's final rewrites so I will be needing some beta readers. Anyone interested? ;)

T.O.R is coming along nicely. The characters are getting impatient, but that's something I am dealing with...lol.

The rewrite of my high school short is coming along nicely as well. The most difficult part  about this is the technology that has changed. I have to keep a close eye on that and change it to the present day rather than the day it was written. You thought I was going to tell you when it was written didn't you? No such luck! ;) You'll have to try harder than that Mr.! ;)

Anyhow. There is so much going on right now, it's hard to keep my mind straight on what's going on...lol. Some people ask me how I find time to write. I tell them I don't. I make the time. ;)

So I guess that's all for now. Write to you later!

On a Roll....
Mood:  energetic
Now Playing: Anthrax
Topic: Writing

So 2000 words written today. I was so hoping my writer's block would disappear and it seems it has died a slow painful death. Good. The more painful the better. So 15,000+ words into it. Page 50. Only 250 to go. Well. I want to go to 400 but I think that's a bit grandiose...lol. So 250 to 300 is where it will sit. Chances are, it will be longer once it goes to print. The pages of a book are considerably smaller than the Open Office page...lol.

I am completely worn out though. That's what happens. If this was my job...my ONLY job I would nap after the writing session. Writing makes me hungry and tired...lol. Who needs drugs? Just write! :)

I am shopping around for places to get books reviewed. I need to bite the bullet and get some of my works reviewed. If for nothing else but to see what I need to work on as a writer. Don't get me wrong. I don't usually put too much stock in reviews...I have my own drum I dance to. And it's made out of bone and skin. The leathered skin gives it it's unique sound. Nothing can compare really.

Anyhow. That's what's going on in my neck of the woods...lol. I will be posting something I did for the writer's group that I own, so be on the look out for that.

And before I leave you for the comfort of the acid pool...I need to vent. It's a bit off topic from writing, but I am sure you will all forgive me....

A few years ago, te BBC cancelled the most amazing sci-fi show EVER. Personally, I thought it was better than Dr. Who. Please no death threats...I have more shadowlings I can send out than what you want on your ass. This is an opinion..look up the definition if you aren't sure what that is. ;)

Anyhow...back to Torchwood. Yes. That was the name of it. I was so hooked the week actually went by slow. This was the ONLY show I actually looked forward to. That I COULDN'T miss. I would request off work to be able to see it (not really. We had TiVO. ;) But you get my point). Anyhow. It's coming back! YAAAY! Wait...It's coming back on Starz. WTF?? I don't get Starz and I don't see spending $25 just to watch Torchwood. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the show enough to do it, but not when I can't really afford the $25. I have people I owe money too.

Anyway. That's my rant...

One Down, Countless to Go!
Mood:  lazy
Now Playing: All That Remains
Topic: Writing

The first draft of my short story is done! Anyone who thinks writing is an "easy" job...let me briefly explain.

Where some of us have inclinations toward the arts (writing, painting, songwriting, etc) things aren't as effortless as they seem. The only thing I can speak for is writing. So here we go....

First comes the idea. That's the easy part. Most writers get a minimum of one idea a day. Some are page worthy...a lot aren't. Some, still, are worthy of the short or part of a bigger plan...

Then comes the putting it on paper. This is where the work begins. We all have different ways of writing. I float somewhere in between free writing (just writing what comes to mind without pause) and specific (consciously thinking and planning your words). There is no right or wrong way...whatever is right for each individual writer. This can take anywhere from a week to six months.  Depending on the size of the project. Hell. Some can even take a year or more.

After the first draft comes the waiting period. The story has to sit in its room and think for a while. The author, on the other hand, needs to forget about the story. Work on something else. This, also, can take different times for different writers and projects.

Once it has sat for long enough, you pull it out and revise. This is where drastic differences set in. Everyone has their own preferences as to how to do it, how many times to do it, what to do when....So I am going to only take you through what I do. Just remember, the work is pretty much the same...

So I pull it out and round it out. I re-read the whole manuscript and find the areas that are thin....lacks description or could be more descriptive. Or even different.

Once this is done I let it sit for no more than half the time that I let it sit the first time.

Once it's done sitting again, I go back through and cut the words down by 10%. All manuscripts can be cut 10%. ALL of them can be.

Once this is done I read through it once more...letting it sit maybe 2 days. This read through is only to catch anything that's glaring. Making sure it comes together and flows.

Once my, personal, final read through is done I send it off to my beta readers. Beta readers are those who read the manuscript from the readers' point of view. They aren't reading it for grammatic errors or even spelling errors. If they pick them out...cool....but a beta reader's main job is to read the manuscript from a reader's point of view. To make sure the story flows and keep an eye out for continuity issues. Beta readers are also good at finding the confusions..."Why did he do that?" "What is a symbiote?" "Why would he have this and not that?" If your beta readers have the same questions, that means something needs to be added or revised to come across clearer.

Once all of your feedback comes back from your betas, you can now start  shopping it around. Once the manuscript is done, the work is only half done. All the while, you have started on your next manuscript. But, the footwork is a topic for another day. ;)

So, as you can see, a writer's life is not just sitting and vomiting words on paper and calling it a novel. There is a lot of work that goes into everything we do.

With that said. The first draft  of my short story is done! lol. I am starting on the next short at work today. I write during my lunch break...lol.

This new one is actually something I wrote in high school.  I am going to update it an, well...rewrite it...lol. However, I want to put the original, unedited, untouched, at the end of the story. I think that would be kind of interesting, to not only see how it evolved, but also see the high school writing...lol.

Anyhow...I think that's it for now!

Pen to Paper
Mood:  on fire
Now Playing: 3 Doors Down and Alice Cooper
Topic: Writing

So I sit here at my desk wondering how to start today's writing. See, I have been stumbling through a bit of writer's block as of late. I am stuck. I do my best to force myself to write something everyday, but sometimes it's more of a chore. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE writing and couldn't see myself doing anything else, but some days I suffer from, not just writer's block, but brain death.

Something dark has my muse held captive and are doing unspeakable things to him. Yes. My muse is a "him". Go figure. We can't pick them...they just appear. If we don't want them, then we don't want to write. Anyhow. I promised myself I wouldn't digress in this post. I don't know how well that is going to go over, but we will see.

So my muse is being held captive by the shadows. They are probably torturing him mercilessly. I cringe to even think about what they are doing to him. I can hear the screams and smell the blood. I need to rescue him from the horror that comes out at night. And where he is....it's night all the time. At least this way, perhaps he will come back with some ideas.

So again, I sit here at my desk, wondering how to start the writing for today. I try to get my writing done early so I don't have to worry about it. I have found that if I don't get my writing done early, I begin to resemble a cow. Chewing, swallowing, regurgitating, and chewing some more. By the end of the day, it has been chewed to a pulverized, thick paste that would do much better on a cracker than on pages. It would most likely tasteless and more of the consistancy of glue. So I get things done early.

It is going on 4:30pm as I sit and contemplate. I need to get my gear on and plunge into the shadows to pull my muse out from the rotting depths. 3 Doors Down is fading and soon will come the original Shock Rocker....Mr. Alice Cooper. Perfect hunting music.

Off I go. If I have not returned in a day or two, do not come looking for me. I will find you. Dead and decayed, but I will find you. If you smell something off behind you, please don't spray anything. It's hell on the lungs....
